Liza Lacroix

One. Two. Three. […] Twenty-Six.

A new artists' book by Liza Lacroix, created for her first institutional exhibition. Co-published by Ligature Press and Neue Galerie Gladbeck, One. Two. Three. […] Twenty-Six. brings together new paintings from the exhibition, along with a selection of eighteen others from the past three years, all reproduced here for the first time.

Lacroix reconsiders them through the lens of two evocative texts: one made up of questions inspired by the HBO series Six Feet Under (2001-2005), the other an unvarnished memoir of the artist’s own painful past. Printed on translucent paper, Lacroix’s umber tones appear both on the surface and beneath it, as though from burst capillaries—handprints left on skin by a grip that clings too tightly to let go. Each painting is dissected with multiple, aggressive crops, a repetitive pulse that becomes a form of vivisection: a gaze that is both semi-forensic and obsessively focused, reserved for the revered and the departed.
