In Fukushima: Winter Flowers, Spanish artist José María Sicilia (born 1954) addresses the 2011 tsunami in Japan. The book’s title is inspired by the poem of Tamiki Hara “Natsu no Hana (Flowers of Summer)”. The poet Hara was a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bombing.
Sicilia is interested in the sounds of the birds and of the tsunami, and interprets them through different parameters, like: data readings of the ocean recorded during the tsunami, recordings collected at the time, for example, alert messages or the sound of birds, or voices of people taped on videos in Youtube, etc.
It accompanies the exhibition that opens on October 5th at the Art Museum in Fukushima.
