Wang Bing

For almost twenty years, Chinese artist Wang Bing has been producing a rhizomatic body of work (processuality, variability, performativity) at the intersection of cinema and contemporary art. In order to grasp the singularity of his production (film, installation, video work), the author sets out to shed light on Wang Bing's creative process within a poetic and anthropological approach that acknowledges the artistic turn of documentary creation. Twenty-first-century practices are undergoing a process of hybridization and broadening, but also a renewed commitment that establishes the artist as a historical and political subject. In this essay, we consider how the modes of existence resulting from this socio-genetic terrain are constitutive of Wang Bing's "post-documentary" image-making.
