On a marginal, almost deterritorialized site—a floating rooftop in New York, lit by the fire of a single night—Melik Ohanian envisions a new enclosed setting. BORDERLAND – I Walked a Far Piece unfolds as an open scene, a refuge, where the artist films characters inspired by Rudolf Wurlitzer’s novel Flats, allowing them to continue their existence in the present moment. The various narratives of their wanderings intertwine, creating new territories within the darkness. Over the course of a single night—during which the lights of the electric city seem to have faded—Melik Ohanian evokes the fragmented rhythm and beat poetry of these celestial drifters’ nomadic lives, while distant sounds from the ground can be heard.
