Recently inaugurated, the project Chapultepec: Nature and Culture was conceived by Gabriel Orozco, at the invitation of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in 2019. The artist created the master plan and coordinated the works for Chapultepec Forest, an emblematic urban forest located in the heart of Mexico City.

During six years, Orozco worked with a team of national and international experts, as well as a group of volunteers to bring this project to life. The master plan is guided by the principles of permaculture, which include care for the earth and the people, along with fair distribution. The proposal is ecologically respectful, socially responsible, and economically viable, and reaffirms the park’s original purpose as a public forest. It enhances its environmental potential by strengthening and expanding its green areas, and doubles its cultural offerings, diversifying its public spaces.

"Chapultepec is on track to become a vast cultural and environmental campus for people to enjoy. Instead of the forest being neglected, we’ve revitalized it. [...] It's impossible to think of political art without considering the environment. One of the political responsibilities of art is its commitment to environmental culture and climate change."—Gabriel Orozco.
