Galerie Chantal Crousel congratulates Haegue Yang on receiving the Republic of Korea Culture and Arts Award (Presidential Citation) in the Visual Arts Sector.

Haegue Yang has been named the recipient of the Republic of Korea Culture and Arts Award (Presidential Citation) in the Visual Arts sector by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Do Jonghwan; hereafter MCST).

Yang is recognized internationally for her powerful interdisciplinary practice that consists of immersive artworks in multiple mediums and reflects her detailed observations of our contemporary cultural and social environments. Her work explores hybrid cultural systems and pays close attention to the complex mix of civilizations around the world. Articulated in her unique language of abstraction, Yang’s practice is founded on her sensitivity to and critical inquiry of contemporary subjects such as "boundaries" and "otherness." She has established a singular and unrivaled practice in contemporary art by incorporating a diverse range of mediums and materials that not only include her signature venetian blind sculpture but also paper collage, installation, and video. Yang’s conceptual rigor and formal vision are framed by her careful consideration of the postmodern condition and the contextual tensions that underlie contemporary history, culture, and politics. By engaging both the individual and social communities that exist around the world, Yang has successfully created a powerful voice that resonates deeply across international borders. In recognition of this vision, earlier this year the Museum Ludwig in Cologne organized the artist’s first mid-career survey show titled Haegue Yang: ETA 1994-2018 that covered 25 years of Yang’s practice with approximately 140 works. This seminal exhibition marked a major milestone in Yang’s career and was accompanied by the publication of a comprehensive catalogue raisonné also titled Haegue Yang: ETA 1994-2018. The catalogue includes several scholarly contributions exploring Yang’s oeuvre and gives an extensive overview of her artistic development to date.
