Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Pierre Huyghe, Anri Sala and Rirkrit Tiravanija present site-specific projects at LUMA Foundation’s inaugural exhibition in Arles.

Endodrome is the first virtual reality artwork by pioneering artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster. It continues Gonzalez-Foerster’s exploration of notions of space, alternative states of consciousness, and interiority. 

After UUmwelt is a new commission created for La Grande Halle. Pierre Huyghe has transformed the site into a situation where human and artificial imaginations are exposed to biological and technological organisms, viral cells and forms, which actively produce an otherworldly sentient environment, populated by processes and mutations.

If and Only If (2018) by Anri Sala, based on Igor Stravinsky’s Elegy for Solo Viola, charts the course of a journey, which becomes an integral part of its musical composition. A snail, gradually travels the full length of a viola bow, innocuously moving across it, but minutely disrupting the exquisite balance on which the maestro’s playing instinctively relies.

Rirkrit Tiravanija has created one of the bars, Drum Café, located on the ground floor area of The Tower designed by Frank Gehry. A 10-metre long monumental tapestry created with artisans in Aubusson factory, central France, is the landmark of the space.
