On the occasion of Debris Field/Notes for a Poem on the Third World/Soleil Nègre, the first solo exhibition by Glenn Ligon at Galerie Chantal Crousel, Paris (September 8 - October 4, 2018), the gallery has published a catalogue in partnership with Is-Land Editions, comprising a text by Sara Nadal-Melsio and a selection of poems by Gregg Bordowitz.
With this project, Galerie Chantal Crousel wished to focus on a renowned artist, from the late 80s and beginning of the 90s generation. This first catalogue in French is unprecedented for this artist few people know in France, in comparison with the impact and stature of his projects abroad, and in the US.
This catalogue consists of a sensible and historical essay by Sara Nadal-Melsio, a young European curator, and of a selection of poems by Gregg Bordowitz, poet and well acquainted with Glenn Ligon’s research when it comes to representations of the self, race and gender. His book Untitled (I Am a Man), published by After all Editions, was dedicated to the artist in 2018.
The selected poems create a literary echo – which is often mentioned by the artist himself to describe and nourish his own work — to the materiality we are immediately confronted to when looking upon Glenn Ligon’s work. Carefully selected, the poems occupy an important place within the catalogue.
