The GESTUS exhibition is a bold experiment that Hassan Khan deliberately designed to operate within strict constraints. Aware of the extreme conditions of contemporary times, he embraced limitations—both in terms of time and resources—not just as conditions of the process but as material to work with. Throughout the intense, time-bound production, his main focus was on the question of what kind of artwork can even operate under the given circumstances.

The process unfolded as an unpredictable real-time experiment. With only three weeks to produce the exhibition, Khan navigated constant pressure, adapting and responding to emerging challenges. Rather than seeing these restrictions as obstacles, he treated them as a framework to work within. Flexibility became essential, and the traces of this experiment are deeply embedded in final exhibition, influencing its appearance and shaping its form.

It all began with the search for a designer/digital illustrator, musicians for a fictional band, actors for a video, a glassmaker. The illustrator collaborated closely with Khan to create digital illustrations—now printed on wood, aluminium, and fabric—while a print technician provided operational support by preparing 45 posters for print, originally designed by Khan on his smartphone.

At the same time, another search was set in motion for band members and actors. Khan had a clear vision for his collaborators: he composed four songs for a four-member band’s EP and, working with the band, created character profiles for a live radio appearance, where each member not only played the EP but also embodied a distinct persona. For the video, openness and flexibility were essential—especially in identifying suitable actors. Three actors were selected to engage in an improvisational process through an open call. To guide their performances, Khan created a small score for each actor, and he shot the entire video using his smartphone. Another layer of the exhibition features a dialogue between Khan and a glassmaker in the creation of several glass objects inspired by populist comedy.
