The exhibition brings together two artists, Käthe Kollwitz and Mona Hatoum—one historical and one contemporary—whose art serves as a memorial against suffering and oppression and stands for greater humanity.

Like Kollwitz, Hatoum’s work addresses basic human conditions of exile and displacement as well as the familiar and the domestic, which is threatened with destruction or alienated by institutional violence and systems of power and control.

Both artists adopt a formal language reduced to the essentials and a minimal use of colour. Although they both deal with serious themes, their works are not expressions of resignation. With their firm stands against suffering and oppression, they testify to a positive commitment.
