The images and texts compiled in this volume are the answer to an open call included in the 1998 first edition of the unusually titled publication Casper. I asked readers for their voluntary submission to help select which are the most horrible and depressing spots in the world's largest city. In some other cases I asked specific people to submit an entry, those whose input I thought was absolutely necessary.
I dedicate this survey to those who collaborated and I reiterate my sincere gratitude.
I have transcribed the original text in its integrity as a way of introducing the project.
