何塞·玛丽亚·⻄西⾥亚

Noches y Días

The exhibition presented in this catalogue marks a singular encounter between the work of José María Sicilia and the historic interiors of the Liria Palace in Madrid. Home to the House of Alba since the eighteenth century, the palace is both a private residence and one of Europe's most remarkable repositories of art, where centuries of collecting have brought together masterpieces across periods and disciplines. As the palace commemorates the seventieth anniversary of its post-war reconstruction, it welcomes the Madrid-born artist for an intervention conceived specifically in dialogue with its architecture, history, and collections.

Rather than treating the palace as a backdrop, Sicilia approaches it as a living space of memory, reflection, and transformation. Working with forms deeply embedded in its visual and cultural language—folding screens, libraries, mirrors, and altarpieces—he creates a poetic conversation between his own artistic vocabulary and the palace's historic fabric. Mirrors embedded within his screens dissolve the boundaries between artwork, architecture, and viewer, while light and shadow become active materials that reshape the perception of rooms, portraits, tapestries, and furnishings. Through these subtle interventions, familiar spaces are revealed anew, inviting visitors to rediscover the palace through a continuous interplay of history, literature, music, and contemporary art.
