Haegue Yang, recipient of the 13th Benesse Prize, takes part in a group exhibition featuring the four awardees Pannaphan Yodmanee, Zul Mahmod and Amanda Heng. Yang presents Sol LeWitt Upside Down – Steel Structure Scaled Down 10 Times (2021), a white, suspended venetian blind installation with a grid equipped with cold white light tubes. Yang’s installation made of venetian blinds, one of her signature materials, is iconic in its distinctive play on Modular Structures by Sol LeWitt, an American minimalist and dominant figure of modern art history.

A unique collaboration between Haegue Yang and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the title Ring of Fire refers to a tectonic belt of volcanoes and earthquakes that surrounds the Pacific Ocean. Focusing on the sensations of light, shadow, movement, and vibration, Yang and Weerasethakul conceived an immersive environment based on their common interests in channeling elements of our reality that frequently escape from view.
