Early in her career, Mona Hatoum used a combination of media to pointedly reflect on power and how it is used. Mona Hatoum: Early Works presents a selection of documented performances and video works from that formative stage of Hatoum’s career. This exhibition is a window into the early practice of a prolific artist, revisiting foundational works from the vantage of the present: twenty-five years after hosting Hatoum’s solo exhibition at the MCA in 1997.

Hatoum’s work reaches across international, personal, and political contexts to touch on complex ideas that still resonate today. The politics imposed on women’s bodies, connections among globally marginalized communities, and the relationship between spectators and subjects are among Hatoum’s key concerns in this period.
