Artistic directors Rirkrit Tiravanija and Gridthiya Gaweewong collaborate for the third edition of the Thailand Biennale bringing together Thai and international artists including Tarek Atoui, Pierre Huyghe and Haegue Yang.
Tarek Atoui's installation The Wind harvesters (2023), presented at Mae Fah Luang Art and Cultural Park, is an air circuit inspired by the water irrigation systems of rice fields in the area of Chiang Rai. It is made out of bamboo sections into which traditional wind instruments from the Akha and Lisu tribes were mounted and tuned by Atoui, the musicians and instrument makers of these communities. A computer-based composition translates the dived sounds of the traditional wind instruments as well as hidden sound flows, creating an intriguing acoustic composition for the audience.
Pierre Huyghe presents the film Untitled (Human Mask) (2014).
For the Biennale, Haegue Yang conceives new Mesmerizing Mesh pieces, which revolve around the paper altar of Hmong people at home. In addition to these works, The Randing Intermediates – Inception Quartet, rattan sculptures produced for her solo show at MCAD (Manila, 2020) and Incantations – Entwinement, Endurance and Extinction, wallpaper which spreads an intriguing clash between diverse shamanic practice, are also exhibited at Chiang Rai International Art Museum.
Talk by Haegue Yang, Ernesto Neto and Sakarin Krue on December 14, 2023 at 12:30pm at Silpakorn University, Bangkok. Registration here.
