This booklet was published for Haegue Yang’s exhibition Mesmerizing Mesh – Paper Leap and Resonating Habitat at the Galerie Chantal Crousel, from October 18, 2022 to December 03, 2022.
For several years, Haegue Yang has been investigating the ambivalent relationship between spirit and matter alongside mystical practices, from European paganism to Asian shamanism. This interest has led her to different paper-cutting traditions and the sacred dimension of paper. In particular hanji, a traditional Korean paper made by hand from mulberry bark, inspired the Mesmerizing Mesh series of paper collages. In this booklet, a conversation between Yang and anthropologist Nicolas Bureau accompanies photographs of the Mesmerizing Mesh works. Expanding from their meeting in Paris at the opening of Yang’s exhibition at Chantal Crousel Gallery, the conversation delves into shamanism, travel, the status of artists and anthropologists in society, and practices that transcend the boundaries between fields of knowledge.
