Mona Hatoum

Mona Hatoum is considered one of the most influential artists of her generation. Her performances, videos, photographs, sculptures, installations and works on paper deal with issues of displacement, marginalisation, exclusion and state control – themes she examines against the backdrop of both her own biography and current societal developments.

With the exhibition Mona Hatoum, three Berlin institutions present the multifaceted work of the artist in the first large-scale survey of her work in Berlin. The three-part exhibition takes place at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Georg Kolbe Museum, and KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art. The exhibition project brought together key works by Hatoum from the performance and video work of the 1980s to varied productions from the last two decades as well as new, site-specific sculptures and installations.

This publication presents a detailed overview of the individual exhibitions. Extensive documentation is complemented by numerous short texts written in collaboration with the artist, which address the background and context of the respective works. The essay by Tamar Garb highlights the connections in Mona Hatoum’s work to Minimalism as well as feminist art practices and points to the ongoing need for art to engage with politics in the struggle for the empowerment of women.
