We are delighted to announce Jean-Luc Moulène’s first solo exhibition at the Galerie Chantal Crousel. The exhibition presents an ensemble of works that embraces twenty years of creativity, as well as several new sculptures, made for this exhibition. The show will evolve in time, and is articulated in two parts. Part 1, starting on Monday, June 7, will move over in an uninterrupted way  in part 2 - coin-ciding with the opening on Friday July 2nd, thus leading to a progression of the viewer’s experience in the work.

The exhibition displays a diversity of media: photographs (the medium most currently used by the artist), sculptures ( i.e.. the sculptures presented in the exhibition “The Altered Everyday” at the Venice Biennial 2003) and drawings - expressions of mental cartography outlining the movements and process of experience. This wide scale provides several threads in Jean-Luc Moulène’s thinking and perceiving. It also reveals works seldom or even never shown before.

The articulation of the exhibition focuses on two moments of the formal evolution in Moulène’s work – from representation to presence. The drawings, like maps, are guidelines or schemes that translate the artist’s mental exploration into its visualised, communicable representation, a diagram freed from its mathematic or scientific origin, organising the space of the paper support, or the space of his photography. In the second part of the exhibition, a wall and floor drawing will take over, suggesting a place for a sculpture : ‘La guérite’, as well as for the visitors. In the first part of the show the spectator is an observer, whereas in the second he becomes a dancer, experiencing the work as a choreography.

The paradigms of photographic research are stretched and renewed, while being thought in terms of order (chaos being one of its forms), of movement / stop, and put in relation with our political, social structures… Regardless of their medium, the works bring out confrontations between vari-ous figurations of reality.

Drawing looking towards photography, photography towards sculpture, the objet envisaged as a photographic shot – an image stopped, stopping time itself -, are an attempt to invert structured systems in order to make them diverge or correspond, to test them, and refine them. The sky pho-tographs are in the basement of the gallery; the spherical sculptures are in constant evolution, almost in motion ; the photographs of gardens and ruins sustain a relation to the past, the current time, and the future, to here and there, escaping any kind of hierarchy.

This exhibition invites us to visit a work during the process of its evolution. The association of works is never constant, never linear and always waiting for new experiences to fill it and enrich it.

For the occasion, the Galerie Chantal Crousel releases a publication with an approach of Jean-Luc Moulène’s work by Daniel and Alexandre Costanzo.
