American artist Glenn Ligon (born 1960) is best known for his historical paintings created from text since the late 1980s, drawing inspiration from the influential writings and speeches of 20th-century cultural figures including Jean Genet, Zora Neale Hurston, Jesse Jackson and Richard Pryor.
